15 November marks the 136th anniversary of the start of the Berlin Africa Conference. In commemoration of this date, the project Dekoloniale Memory Culture in the City is convening the Dekoloniale Berlin Africa Conference. The event will be transmitted live from the project space in Wilhelmstraße 92 in Berlin-Mitte. The project space at Wilhelmstraße 92 is located between the former sites of the Reich Chancellery and the Foreign Office, the settings where events took place back then. The Reich Chancellery is where the envoys of the European powers, the USA and the Ottoman Empire met in 1884 at the invitation of the German Reich and the Republic of France to reach an agreement about the rules for the colonial partitioning of the continent and thus also the exploitation of Africa.
While at the historic conference 19 white men brought their colonial interests on the African continent into balance over a period of four months, we would now like to convene an anti-colonial panel consisting of 19 women of African descent. The Dekoloniale Berlin Africa Conference simultaneously serves as preamble and prelude to Dekoloniale Memory Culture in the City. (press release)

Am 15. November jährt sich der Beginn der Berliner Afrikakonferenz zum 136. Mal. Anlässlich dieses Datums beruft das Projekt Dekoloniale Erinnerungskultur in der Stadt die Dekoloniale Berliner Afrika-Konferenz ein. Die Veranstaltung wird live aus dem Projektraum in der Wilhelmstraße 92 in Berlin-Mitte übertragen. Der Projektraum in der Wilhelmstraße 92 liegt zwischen den ehemaligen Standorten der Reichskanzlei und des Auswärtigen Amtes, den damaligen Schauplätzen des Geschehens. In der Reichskanzlei trafen sich 1884 die Gesandten der europäischen Mächte, der USA und des Osmanisches Reichs auf Einladung des Deutschen Reichs und der Republik Frankreich, um sich über die Regeln für die koloniale Aufteilung des Kontinents und damit auch über die Ausbeutung Afrikas zu verständigen.
Während auf der historischen Afrika-Konferenz 19 weiße Männer über vier Monate hinweg ihre kolonialen Interessen auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent in Ausgleich brachten, möchten wir nun ein antikoloniales Gremium – bestehend aus 19 Frauen afrikanischer Herkunft – einberufen. Die Dekoloniale Berliner Afrika-Konferenz ist zugleich Vorwort und Auftakt von Dekoloniale Erinnerungskultur in der Stadt. (Pressetext)
